The extraordinary function, production and playfulness of this jug have prompted us to rethink the traditional museum display and respond with contemporary visuals.

The shapes of the jug makes it feel surprisingly contemporary. Its geometrical patterns are reminiscent of floral and leaf-style motifs made up of rectangular and triangular slits, cut losanges and mini circles. When observed individually, the motifs are evidently irregular and no two shapes are the same – and yet together with its uniform apple green glaze, the jug’s overall pattern gives a sense of crisp design that would appeal to a modern eye.

The piece trapped inside the jug and the perforated outer-shell that invites the viewer to peer through the body, both point to the puzzling nature of the pierced designs. The trompe-l’oeil effect created by the double-wall construction and the subtle rattle of the ceramic left inside when the jug is turned, makes the design of this jug particularly playful and distinctive.
