CC BY NC.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The view today looks very different.<\/p>\n<p>The Arch was originally commissioned by George IV to celebrate the victories of the Napoleonic wars and was positioned at the entrance to Green Park, opposite the screen wall on the south side of Hyde Park. In that position, it was straight in front of Apsley House, the Duke Of Wellington\u2019s London residence. The Duke was, of course, a national institution, Napoleonic war hero of Waterloo, statesman, Prime Minister, and pin-up (look at the statue of Achilles behind Apsley House, it was funded by a charitable body known as\u00a0\u2018The Ladies of England\u2019, and originally it did not have a fig leaf.)<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_254\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-254\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-254\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.courtauld.ac.uk\/digitalmedia\/files\/2018\/08\/CON_B01022_F006_001_detail-300x217.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.courtauld.ac.uk\/digitalmedia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2018\/08\/CON_B01022_F006_001_detail-300x217.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.courtauld.ac.uk\/digitalmedia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2018\/08\/CON_B01022_F006_001_detail-768x556.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.courtauld.ac.uk\/digitalmedia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2018\/08\/CON_B01022_F006_001_detail.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-254\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CON_B01022_F006_001_detail. The Courtauld Institute of Art. CC BY NC.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 1836, a decision was taken to erect a statue of the Duke on horseback on top of the Arch. It was huge, the biggest equestrian statue of its time, 28 feet tall. As a result, it was widely ridiculed and the arch became known as the Wellington Arch.
