Diana, Olga, and Mithi, Banks of the Seine, 2012

Inspired by Edouard Manet, Banks of the River Seine, 1874.

We liked the bright colours, the well balanced tones and shadows and the general warm atmosphere of the painting. We liked the overall summer feeling expressed through the quick strokes of paint.

The painting depicts Monet’s wife and son on holiday or on a day out in Argenteuil, a popular day out location just outside Paris, on the river Seine. Manet and Monet were very good friends and painted together. They also went on days out together with their families. Other similar paintings were produced by both artists on the same day and can be directly linked to this one.

Our animation reflects the holiday feeling. It is calm and the pace of the animation is slow, relaxed. The mother and the son arrive on the banks, they look around the area. The gentle wind blows off the mother’s hat, and she picks it up. The nature sounds (water, wind, bird singing) also convey the feeling of holiday. We worked with After Effect and Photoshop to create a peaceful effect.

This painting is probably Manet’s most serious exploration of plein-air Impressionism. It was partly painted outdoors during a summer visit to Claude Monet and his family. Monet lived in Argenteuil, a rapidly developing town on the outskirts of Paris. His wife, Camille, and son Jean posed for the figures on the riverbank. Bright colours and quick strokes of paint vividly convey the summer light and the ripples on the water.
